glucose transporter

glucose transporter
(= GLUT-1 etc.)
Generic name for any protein that transports glucose. In bacteria these may be ABC proteins, in mammals they belong to a family of 12-transmembrane integral transporters. GLUT-4 is found in muscle and is insulin-responsive. Defects in GLUT-4 may be responsible for some forms of diabetes.
